Q method

Q method is a mind-mapping technique that consists of respondents rank-ordering cards. Designated as a mixed method with participatory aspects, it is a powerful interview technique that stimulates informants to speak about their points of view, and helps to make these subjective views comparable.

It can be used in combination with quantitative or mixed method approaches, but is also very effective in combination with deeply qualitative and reflexive studies. It is generally executed with statements, but images, objects and even musical fragments can be used as well.

In a practical workshop, participants can learn how to design a Q sort and grid, execute the Q sort procedure, and analyse its results, fully preparing them for using the method independently in the field.

About the instructor

Dr. Vanessa Wijngaarden successfully introduced Q method in anthropology, and designed a procedure for its use with non-literate participants. She published on how Q method can be used in combination with ethnography and employed the method to challenge existing theories in tourism studies.

Learning objectives

  • Participants will learn about the methodological principles behind Q method
  • Participants will learn how to design and execute a Q study
  • Participants will learn how to integrate Q method in their research process and use it in combination with other methods and methodological approaches
  • Participants will learn how to use Q method to increase informants responsiveness, and how to employ the technique to extend their critical and reflexive approaches
  • Participants will learn how to use PQmethod and undertake the statistical operations as well as qualitative interpretations of their results
  • Where appropriate, participants will receive individualised advice with regard to the set-up and execution of a Q study in their specific research situations

Participant reactions (acquired through anonymous evaluations)

‘The practical procedures were fun and insightful’

‘Very clear, informative’

‘Practical, concise; immediately capable of doing it in the field’
