About the instructor

Dr. Vanessa Wijngaarden has obtained double BA and MA degrees with the highest distinction in political science and cultural anthropology from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During her PhD in social anthropology at the University of Bayreuth, Germany she focused on research methodology, combining traditional ethnographic techniques with Q method and video-assisted observations, integrating all in computer-assisted analyses. Working with Maasai from Tanzania and tourists from a variety of Western countries, she successfully introduced Q method in anthropology, adapting the method for use with non-literate participants. She published on how Q method can be used in combination with ethnography and used the method to challenge existing theories in tourism studies.
